A path forward for Session
Thanks to the incredible and ongoing support Session has received from the community, we have secured a path forward to continue developing Session beyond June 8. A smaller team will continue development into 2027, focused on strengthening the project and building a foundation for its long-term future.
Those working on Session want to express gratitude to the dedicated community members who have helped keep the project going through their contributions, whether they be direct donations, continuing to operate nodes in the network or raising awareness of our donation campaign.
Although shutdown procedures have been cancelled, the shape of the Session project is still changing considerably. The project will now be led by Jason Rhinelander, long-time Chief Software Architect and member of the Session Technology Foundation (STF).
Currently, the donations received are enough to support critical infrastructure, to retain Jason as a developer, and possibly to add one other full-time developer to the project. There is also still a small team of volunteers contributing to other aspects of the ecosystem.
Without your support, Session would no longer exist.
Going forward, the foundation will operate with much lower costs and resources. It will continue to investigate ways of raising additional funding, either via external contributions or through efforts like Session Pro.
Despite recent uncertainty, Session continues to be a successful app — with millions of downloads, strong app store ratings, and continued growth (recently surpassing 1.7 million monthly active users).
Session is fortunate to have contributors who believe deeply in its mission and are willing to accept lower compensation than they could earn elsewhere or volunteer their time to support the ecosystem. If you have donated during this campaign, we sincerely thank you. Every contribution helps advance Session. While the foundation now has the funding needed to keep Session moving forward, additional donations are welcome and would allow the foundation to expand the development team, accelerating the delivery of new security, privacy, and usability improvements.

The foundation now has a path forward for Session, but there is still much more that can be achieved with additional support. If you believe you can help, please reach out to [email protected].
